The Center is developing deterministic microgrinding (DMG) processes and computer-controlled equipment that will economically and consistently manufacture aspheric and freeform optical shapes and surfaces to sub-micron tolerances. The contouring DMG technique produces significantly lower surface roughness and subsurface damage than the conventional brittle mode grinding process.
